In 2018, Ajoke Amusat was posted to Plateau State for NYSC (an obligatory youth service for fresh graduates in Nigeria). She fell in love with the Lifestyle, the ambiance, and the abundance of fresh produce in Jos immediately and decided to stay. She shared a tweet on strawberries on the social media platform Twitter and immediately the tweet started trending with people asking questions and being surprised that strawberries grew in Nigeria.

The positive response to her post led her to explore the city in search of more produce. She spent a month traveling around the state, crossing bridges and climbing mountains even when it was considered not to be safe, at one point she was caught in the middle of a crisis between rival tribes, but on the bright side, she found blackcurrant on this day.

She met with many local small-scale farmers with tropical and exotic fruits and vegetables grown for their personal consumption with 80% of the harvest rotting away due to lack of access to consumers. It took a while to earn the trust of her growers \ partners, but she persisted and committed to unlocking the value in Nigeria’s locally grown produce

Ajoke was keenly aware of the need to create awareness of locally grown produce and to build a sustainable food chain between local farmers and consumers so the local farmer can have a self-sufficient lifestyle. With this idea in mind, The Grocery Lady was born in 2023.
